The Role of a School Counselor
School counselors provide a comprehensive school counseling program that improves student achievement and enhances the academic, career and personal/social development of all students. The comprehensive school counseling program is delivered through classroom lessons, small group counseling and individual counseling. School counselors collaborate with parents, teachers, administrators and other school staff to promote student success. School counselors also provide leadership and advocacy to promote equity and access to opportunities and rigorous educational experiences for all students.

Small Groups are offered to students based on individual student, school and community needs, which are assessed through survey data, a parent/teacher referral or other relevant data. School counselors prioritize group offerings based on school data.
Small groups typically include 4-5 students and are short-term (5-6 sessions). Groups cover possible topics, such as: study skills, friendship, anxiety/test anxiety, social skills, self-esteem, book clubs, managing feelings, homework, attendance, divorce, and grief. Small groups will include parental consent and student agreement for participation. |
The student and counselor work together to establish an individual goal related to the student's initial concern. While confidentiality is an inherent part of the counseling relationship, children are encouraged to share with parents.
Parents and teachers can make referrals by phone, email, or appointment. Students can also stop by or write a note. Children are generally seen no more than 4-6 individual sessions. School counselors can support family connections with available community resources, as needed. **Note regarding Confidentiality** Wake County email is publicly owned and is not confidential. Information will be kept confidential unless disclosure is required to prevent clear and imminent danger to the student or others, or when legal requirements (court order) demand that confidentiality be revealed. |
